I am tickled by the seven deadly sins in plate format. What a funny use of these grandma-style floral antiques! The set of 7 plates was for sale on Etsy, but alas it has sold. I guess the 7 virtues will have to do.

This poster by Hilda Grahnat made me smile with its fun typography and message, which translates to: “What do you do?”

As for me, it would take less time to say what I don’t do, I feel like I’m trying to do so many different things right now, and I’m trying to do them all well. Besides running a small advertising and web agency, investing in private companies and running this blog, I’ve somehow got myself into organizing a conference-style event in the fall. It’s funny to think how full my life has gotten – I definitely used to have more free time, but I’m really happy to be doing things I love.

The World is Your Playground

I’m feeling a little sheepish. Because I dropped off of the blogging planet. I’m hoping to come back to daily posting, but perhaps a little explanation would be in order?

My life completely changed in the last six months. I run my own business – an advertising and web agency called Remarquable Communications – which is taking up a large part of my time. But a lovely time it is: it has been going really well. We have offices in the old port of Montreal, with gorgeous light and brick walls. And some adorable, talented employees. And actual, real live clients whom we are proud to work with. All this in about four months.

Aside from that, I’ve been spending some time with my father evaluating and investing in investment projects. Meeting tons of entrepreneurs and successful business people.

Aside from that, I’ve been spending my spare time reading voraciously, keeping up a regular gym routine and trying to keep some semblance of a social life.

All that to say that I’ve not really had time to blog, but I miss it so much. Hence, my attempt at returning!

I really like this photo of an in-progress canvas by artist Jérémie Martino. It really makes me feel like the world is a playground. That you really have the power to define what you want to do with your life and who you want to be. OK, maybe I’m reading a lot into a simple photo. But that’s how I feel about life these days. And it’s really a very cool feeling.

Pet Portraits

I would totally commission a portrait of my pets. Because Felix and Chip, the family cats, have been momentous enough to immortalize. Like the multiple times Felix, in a quest for adventure, flew off the balcony, escaped from cages or Houdini-ed out of his harness. Or Chip, who got stuck IN the wall, causing us to saw it open to free her. True stories!

Margot

One of my favourite characters from a film is Margot Tenenbaum portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums. Love this print by Stanley Chow that perfectly captures the character. And hey, I’m wearing a Lacoste shirt today, too… And I’m feeling a bit surly and reclusive. We all have our Margot Tenenbaum days, don’t we?

English Muffin World Map

I’m a big fan of Bess from English Muffin. Not only is she a lovely person - I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her – but she’s also super talented. Her illustrations, which are geared toward children, feature colours and shapes that have my imagination running wild. I can only imagine how much kids love her work. Bess’s latest addition to her online shop is a world map, which I am quite excited about. You see, world maps were my favourite things EVER as a kid; I was SO fascinated with travel and new places. So I’m seriously excited about the English Muffin version. Not that it’s on the radar for at least a couple of years, but I would really like my kids to have one of these. Someday. In the meantime, maybe I’ll buy it for me?

Incendies by Denis Villeneuve

One of my favourite Quebec films from recent years is Incendies by Denis Villeneuve, so I was pleased that it was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. It’s the story of two young adults who go back to their mother’s homeland – which is never named in the movie, but closely resembles Lebanon – to fulfil their mother’s death wishes. There are many surprises in store for them. It’s a movie about war and politics – some of the plot twists are loosely based on actual events from Lebanon’s history – but above all the film is about family and love. The storytelling is powerful and the cinematography is stunning. I highly recommend seeing this film if you can find it playing anywhere near you!
