Shopping For: Cable Knits

Oct 29
2010

When I think “cable-knit” I think of big, floppy, comfy sweaters for warm winter moments by the fire. I don’t think of them as particularly stylish, but the following looks made me feel otherwise:

A quick spin around my favourite online shops led me discover all sorts of cable-knits, in the form not only of hats and socks and sweaters.. but also some really lovely little pants and dresses.

The Princess and the Pea

Oct 28
2010

The Princess and the Pea was one of my favourite stories growing up. I delighted in imagining all of those mattresses stacked on top of each other.  So I was pretty excited when I saw this photo from Lela Rose’s bridesmaid dress lookbook… Do you think they really put a pea underneath the mattresses?

From Book to Look: The Great Gatsby

Oct 27
2010

This week’s book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald in its drop-dead gorgeous Coralie Bickford-Smith cover design.  I admit, I didn’t read this edition, it not being available for purchase yet, but it’s far prettier than past covers, no? It’s like the Great American Novel made pretty! And the book itself. Well. Let’s say it’s a favourite of mine? I love a lot of the authors from this period: Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Rhys, Gide, Camus. The voice and style is modern but still particular to its era. There’s a certain nonchalance and casualness that, when coupled with the underlying social commentary, is super appealing. And the characters in the Great Gatsby were certainly well-dressed.  It’s the high life, the society parties, the flapper dresses and glamorous accessories. I thought the Haute Hippie dress is a perfect embodiment of the book.

Jewellery as Art

Oct 26
2010

I really love seeing how other women display and store their jewellery; I even wrote a blog post about it back in March. Jewellery is a form of art and just like any other art, you can display it.

Jewellery designer Pamela Love’s home was recently featured on The Selby. It reminded me of how much fun I had digging around a vintage jewellery shop the other day. So much beauty, just like in a gallery. Not just jewellery but tons of pretty bits and objects…

PS. Pamela Love’s jewellery is amazing! Check it out.

Weekend Recaps: October Weekends

Oct 25
2010

I haven’t been very good at writing my recent weekend recaps, so here are a few snapshots from past weeks. Mireille was in town from Halifax and one night we made homemade pizza, drank wine and admired her tattoos! Another weekend, Teri and I tried out La Montée de Lait for brunch (AMAZEballs) and this past weekend, I checked out La Braderie de mode québécoise (a sort of mega-sale featuring all Québec fashion designers). The Braderie was crazy busy; to be honest it was a little too crowded for me!

Some things I didn’t document on camera: a fantastic Danse Danse show, a riveting Spanish film called Celda 211 at the Festival du nouveau cinema, a HILARIOUS Louis C.K. show and tons of lovely evenings with friends and family. I have to say that life is BUSY these days. There are new projects, too, which I’ll write more about sometime… I’m really excited for the next year!
