A Posh Pâtisserie

One of the things that fascinates me about Latin America is the presence of closed-off, ritzy neighbourhoods that contrast sharply with the surrounding areas. When Les and I were visiting Argentina in 2008, some friends took us to the very posh San Isidro neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. It was a beautiful place with cobbled streets and stately homes but so unexpected in its opulence.

That’s what I was reminded of when I read that this French macarons shop is located in San Pedro, Mexico, one of the most affluent suburbs of Latin America. Theurel & Thomas pâtisserie underwent a complete rebranding by Anagrama, the result of which is pristine, posh, and altogether stunning. How beautifully the colourful macarons pop out against the all-white setting. But I can imagine how much this place contrasts with the surrounding area which is likely not so moneyed, and… aseptic. While the place itself is a total treat for the eyes, something about it makes me a bit sad and uncomfortable. What do you think?

Oh my. This place is really something else. I love how the room is absolutely minimal and completely white. Definitely highlights the treats.

Wow, yes, the place is absolutely stunning, but I definitely know what you mean about the contrast with the surrounding area. I wonder what it’s like in context…aseptic is probably a good word: it looks like no one’s ever stepped foot in there.

Red is the ultimate cure for sadness.
